PASTOR’S NOTES
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion
To make it possible for God’s holy people to receive Holy Communion at Mass with the Sacred Host and Precious Blood, we need a number of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. You may be thinking of serving God’s holy people by helping to distribute Holy Communion at Mass. Here is some information to assist you.
The ordinary minister of Holy Communion is a bishop, priest or deacon. Other members of the faithful may be commissioned as extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion to assist with the distribution of Holy Communion as needed.
Extraordinary ministers may distribute Holy Communion at Mass when there are insufficient numbers of ordained ministers to ensure a timely and reverent distribution of Communion. Outside of Mass some extraordinary ministers may assist priests and deacons in the distribution of Holy Communion to the sick and shut-ins.
Extraordinary ministers must be Catholics whose qualities of Christian life, faith and morals recommend them. They follow the formula for all ministries in the Church, they must have received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist, be sixteen years of age or older and participate regularly in Sunday Mass.
If you meet these, please call the Parish Center at 818-784-0105 and leave your name and phone number and a message saying you wish to be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion.

DID YOU KNOW?
Report inappropriate or illegal content on the Internet
One of the main reasons that children do not report the inappropriate content they find online is fear of punishment from parents. If you let them know that it is not their fault if they come across an inappropriate site, they will be more willing to come to you when it happens. If your children ever show you a site that contains illegal behavior, such as pornographic images of children, contact your Internet Service Provider and the CyberTipline at: www.cybertipline.com.
For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at 213-637-7650.

Archdiocesan Celebration of Cultures
“Unity and Diversity – One Lord of All”
Our archdiocesan Office of Ethnic Ministry is sponsoring this event on Saturday, September 11, 2010 beginning at 10:00 with Mass at the cathedral. This celebration of cultures highlights and celebrates cultural diversity as an important component of our present society and our Church. Louisville High School’s 50th Jubilee Celebration
In September, 1960, the old Manzanita Ranch with its wooded canyons, green fields and white painted horse corrals became the site for Louisville High School. Ninety-one young women and five teachers formed the nucleus of what is today a fine Catholic college preparatory high school.
The Jubilee Opening Weekend opens on Saturday, September 25th where the Class of 1964 will be honored at Mass at 10:30 am at St. Mel in Woodland Hills. Following the Mass will be a luncheon on the Louisville campus. Invitations will be mailed later this summer.
On Sunday, September 26th, Louisville will present two performances of “At Dawning of Life.” This live drama depicts the journey that the Sisters of St. Louis made from Ireland to the United States in 1949 and the vision of Sister Mary Ronan McDonnell, Louisville’s first principal, the creation of an all-girls Catholic high school in the San Fernando Valley.

THE DESTINY OF ALL MORTAL FLESH
The celebration of today’s feast on a Sunday is unusual on our Roman Catholic calendar. Our observance of the Lord’s Day is held in such high esteem that few other feasts replace it. Occasionally there is a feast—usually of one of the saints—in which the saving power of God in Christ is so uniquely focused that the Roman rite deems it worthy of celebration on the Lord’s Day. Today is such a feast. Yet some are surprised at the brevity of the dogma in its entirety: “We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.” The Roman Catholic Church never defined any specifics or particulars about the event itself. It is not in the scriptures. There are no verifiable eyewitness accounts. At its core, the dogma reveals in Mary the destiny of all mortal flesh, and reinforces our creedal belief in resurrection of the body. This feast strengthens our faith, defined last week in Hebrews as the realization of things hoped for. We find, in Mary, that realization of what we all hope for, what Paul today affirms: “In Christ shall all be brought to life” (1 Corinthians 15:22).
