PASTOR’S NOTES
LENT 2010
The three great Lenten disciplines from the Bible are prayer, fasting and works of charity. Among the tried and true variations on these three disciplines are:
a. Going to Mass during the week as well as on Sunday.
b. Praying the Stations of the Cross the Friday evenings of Lent at 7:00 in the church.
c. 40 Days for Life - a focused pro-life time of prayer, fasting and peaceful vigil to end abortion.
d. Pray the rosary daily if possible.
e. Soup and Cinema on Lenten Monday evenings in the parish auditorium.
40 DAYS FOR LIFE
Join thousands of people across the country to take a courageous stand to end abortion through 40 days of: prayer and fasting, peaceful vigil outside abortion facilities and local pro-life outreach. The 40 days from February 17 through March 28 parallel Biblical history where God used 40 day periods to transform individuals, communities and the entire world. From Noah in the flood to Moses on the mountain to the disciples after Jesus’ resurrection, 40 days is a challenge to God’s People. The question for God’s People is, “Will you accept and meet this challenge?”
Thank you, Religious Education Grade 7 and 8!
Grades 7 and 8 in Religious Education held a bake sale a couple of Sunday mornings ago to raise money for Haiti. Their bake sale raised $132.75! Thank you, Religious Education Grades 7 and 8 for your generosity and work for those suffering in Haiti. An exchange check for $132.75 was mailed to Catholic Relief Services marked “Haiti Relief.”

BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD...
All are welcome to join the SFDS Meditation Prayer Group. We meet every Wednesday at 7:30 pm for one hour in the church. The group follows the teachings of Fr. John Main, a Benedictine Monk, who uses a combination of silence, stillness and prayer. Those who are drawn to silent meditation as a way of experiencing the divine presence in their lives are encouraged to attend. “God is not only out there but also within.”
To learn more about the group’s practice, go online to

SOUP & CINEMA AND MORE
If you are thinking of making some sort of communal “retreat” this Lent, consider using movies instead of books! Fr. Tony Scannell, O.F.M., Spiritual Director of Catholics In Media Associates (CIMA), will be offering five nights of “Soup and Cinema”, with the theme “From Darkness to Light.” Lent itself moves from the darkness of winter to the gradual lengthening of days in spring and we are challenged to move from the shadows within ourselves to the Light of Christ at Easter. The following films could help us to do that: Doubt - Monday, March 1 Slumdog Millionaire - Monday, March 8 Up - Monday, March 15 Gran Torino - Monday, March 22.
Please join Fr. Tony in the SFDS auditorium on these evenings for soup at 6:00pm and an abridged screening of the film at 7:00pm, followed by a brief discussion of the film, linking it to our Lenten mission. There is no admission charge.
By popular demand, Sr. Gretchen Hailer, RSHM, will be returning to present a Saturday morning women’s retreat on
March 13.The topic for the day will be “Prayerways: A How-to Workshop.” We will explore and practice a number of prayer forms that could help us to deepen our Lenten journey, as well as our relationship with God.
March 26: You are invited to join Fr. Ken Deasy for a unique presentation of the Stations of the Cross at 7:00pm. Fr. Ken has incorporated various forms of media; art, film and music to help us pray with Jesus as He journeys to the cross. Everyone from Junior High age and older is invited to attend and a Lenten Soup Supper will follow in the auditorium.
REALLY EASY FUNDRAISING
What if St Francis de Sales earned a donation every time you searched the Internet? Or how about if a percentage of every purchase you made online went to support our cause? Well, now it can! GoodSearch.com is a new Yahoo-powered search engine that donates half its advertising revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate. Use it just as you would any search engine, get quality search results from Yahoo, and watch the donations add up! GoodShop.com is a new online shopping mall which donates up to 30 percent of each purchase to your favorite cause! Hundreds of great stores including Amazon, Target, Gap, Best Buy, ebay, Macy’s and Barnes & Noble have teamed up with GoodShop and every time you place an order, you’ll be supporting your favorite cause. And if you download the GoodSearch - St Francis de Sales toolbar, our cause will earn money every time you shop and search online - even if you forget to go to GoodShop or GoodSearch first! Add the St Francis de Sales toolbar at http://www.goodsearch.com/toolbar/
ALL ABOUT CHANGE
On this Second Sunday of Lent the scriptures remind us that when we have an encounter with our God, things are bound to change. In the first reading God tells Abram to raise his eyes to the sky, promising descendants as numerous as the stars. Abram’s act of faith in the Lord is sealed in covenant, forever changing the course of salvation history. In the Gospel story of the Transfiguration, always proclaimed on this Lenten Sunday, the Lord Jesus changes in appearance before the eyes of the apostles who, like Abram, raise their eyes to the spectacle in the sky. It is Saint Paul who brings it all together for us: “He will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body” (Philippians 3:21). Lent is all about change, all about conversion. Let us cast our own eyes to heaven, awaiting that day when we will be changed-when we will share in Christ’s glory. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

Let nothing disturb you,

TOGETHER IN MISSION
Together in Mission provides substantial financial support to 35 parishes and 61 schools in our Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The theme for 2010 Together in Mission is, “I Give Thanks to You, Lord” (Ps. 138:1). Since 1993 Together in Mission has provided needed funds to disadvantaged parishes and schools. Each of the 291 parishes in our archdiocese has the appeal this weekend to assist Together in Mission. Some questions to ponder are:
1. Do I really believe that I have a duty to help others who are in need?
2. Is what I give to the work of the Church enough to show how grateful I am for what God has given me?
3. Do I appreciate how important every contribution to Together in Mission is to the people in our subsidized parishes and schools?
Sometimes it is difficult to envision how your pledge to Together in Mission can help so many people. But, it does. The flyers and pamphlet for Together in Mission tell how your gift helps.
