PASTOR’S NOTES
LENT 2010
The three great Lenten disciplines from the Bible are prayer, fasting and works of charity. Among the tried and true variations on these three disciplines are:
a. Going to Mass during the week as well as on Sunday.
b. Praying the Stations of the Cross the Friday evenings of Lent at 7:00 in the church.
c. 40 Days for Life - a focused pro-life time of prayer, fasting and peaceful vigil to end abortion.
d. Pray the rosary daily if possible.
e. Soup and Cinema on Lenten Monday evenings in the parish auditorium.

40 DAYS FOR LIFE
Join thousands of people across the country to take a courageous stand to end abortion through 40 days of: prayer and fasting, peaceful vigil outside abortion facilities and local pro-life outreach. The 40 days from February 17 through March 28 parallel Biblical history where God used 40 day periods to transform individuals, communities and the entire world. From Noah in the flood to Moses on the mountain to the disciples after Jesus’ resurrection, 40 days is a challenge to God’s People. The question for God’s People is, “Will you accept and meet this challenge?”

SOUP & CINEMA AND MORE
If you are thinking of making some sort of communal “retreat” this Lent, consider using movies instead of books! Fr. Tony Scannell, O.F.M., Spiritual Director of Catholics In Media Associates (CIMA), will be offering 2 more nights of “Soup and Cinema”, with the theme “From Darkness to Light.” Lent itself moves from the darkness of winter to the gradual lengthening of days in spring and we are challenged to move from the shadows within ourselves to the Light of Christ at Easter. The following films could help us to do that: Up - Monday, March 15 Gran Torino - Monday, March 22.
Please join Fr. Tony in the SFDS auditorium on these evenings for soup at 6:00pm and an abridged screening of the film at 7:00pm, followed by a brief discussion of the film, linking it to our Lenten mission. There is no admission charge.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS
March 26: You are invited to join Fr. Ken Deasy for a unique presentation of the Stations of the Cross at 7:00pm. Fr. Ken has incorporated various forms of media; art, film and music to help us pray with Jesus as He journeys to the cross. Everyone from Junior High age and older is invited to attend and followed by a light Lenten supper in the auditorium.

BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD...
All are welcome to join the SFDS Meditation Prayer Group. We meet every Wednesday at 7:30 pm for one hour in the church. The group follows the teachings of Fr. John Main, a Benedictine Monk, who uses a combination of silence, stillness and prayer. Those who are drawn to silent meditation as a way of experiencing the divine presence in their lives are encouraged to attend. “God is not only out there but also within.”
To learn more about the group’s practice, go online to
The World Community of Christian Meditation at www.wccm.org.

PRAYERS
I am keeping you busy over the last several months with prayer requests. This helps us to be a community of prayer. This time it’s for a person nearer to me. It is my niece, Marie O’Donovan, of Cobh (Cove), Cork, Ireland. My niece, Marie has recently been diagnosed with lung cancer. Marie is married and mother of three married sons, and grandmother of four grandchildren, her joy in life. Marie is a professional singer, choir director and organist at St. Joseph’s Church, Cork. Presently Marie is having non-surgical treatment, feeling dispirited, but more disposed to talking about her condition. I’m confident that your prayers and e-mails will be an added boost to her spirit. You can reach her at ashburton34@yahoo.co.uk . It would be an added consolation if you would e-mail Marie and family to let them know that our Circle of Prayer is praying. This will provide them moral and spiritual support in this time of anxiety.
Thank you once more, friends.
Together again in prayer,
Fr Jerry O’Mahony MSC

Collection for Catholic Relief Services and for the Church in Latin America March 13-14, 2010
Catholic Relief Services is the international humanitarian agency of the Catholic Church in the United States. CRS was founded by the US bishops in 1943 and provides relief in emergency situations. CRS donated $190 million to fund a five-year relief and reconstruction effort in response to the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. CRS made an initial $5 million commitment following the January earthquake in Haiti. Two days after the Haitian earth entrusted the coordination of all Catholic Haitian relief to CRS. These are but the two most recent relief efforts of CRS.
“Keep Faith” is the theme for the 2010 Collection for the Church in Latin America. The proceeds of this collection are distributed to dioceses, parish and other Catholic institutions throughout Latin America and the Caribbean to provide assistance for the many pastoral needs of the region. In 2009 the US Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Subcommittee for the Church in Latin America disturbed $6.8 million among 479 projects. These projects helped promote the Church’s work in catechesis, evangelization and the training of religious personnel. The formation of 20 novices and 70 junior sisters in Peru and the training for 72 seminarians in the Archdiocese of Monterrey, Mexico are only a few examples of the many good works being done to “Keep Faith” in Latin America.

CLOSER THAN YOU THINK
Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
-Thomas Edison

THE HEART OF CONVERSION
Today’s scriptures bring us to the heart of the meaning of the Christian journey of conversion. Saint Paul sums it up beautifully: “Whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away” (2 Corinthians 5:17). The Gospel passage, the parable of the prodigal son, shows us just what this new creation is like. It is all about reconciliation. Just as God removes the yoke of slavery from the shoulders of the Israelites-see today’s first reading-so, too, does the father in the Gospel remove the yoke of guilt and shame from the shoulders of his wayward son. That son first needed to turn away from his sin and seek out and ask forgiveness of his father. That is precisely what we have been doing during this season of repentance. We can only begin to imagine the kind of reconciliation feast that awaits us when we are embraced by our forgiving God.

Is Safety Training Effective for Kids?
Did you know that national and international studies show that children who participated in prevention education programs like VIRTUS, were six to seven times more likely to demonstrate protective behavior - to be more assertive, speak up, and disclose abuse or suspected abuse - than children who had not participated in such programs? Research supports the effectiveness of abuse prevention training of our children. For more information about what our parish and school are doing to teach children to be safe, please contact the parish office or the Archdiocesan Safeguard the Children Office: 213 637 7227.
For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at 213 637 7650.
